Using light to manipulate cells with nanometer precision
Complementary to Raman spectroscopy, CellTool is developing laser microbeam systems that allow non-contact, fully reversible micro-deformation or ‘teasing’ of individual cells. Cells respond to such a stimulus with changes at the molecular level that can again be detected by Raman spectroscopy. A cell’s ‘micro-reaction’ and corresponding Raman spectra are highly specific for its type and differentiation state. It represents an additional, non-contact cellular marker which enables the differentiation of very similar cells that cannot be distinguished by their primary Raman spectra alone.
